Getting Our Hands Dirty

As members of the South Brooklyn Children’s Garden, my family and I get the chance to experience urban agriculture, or, as we call it, a lot of work for a few small carrots and way too much kale. But there’s nothing better than spending a day digging out the beds or planting a new crop. The garden also gave me a chance to repurpose an art installation I’d done in 1999 that featured 600 panels engraved with the word “peace” in the handwriting of women from around the world. Check out the garden — bring your kids & your compost — and the “peace greenhouse” at Sackett & Columbia Streets in Brooklyn. Logo design donated by Cynthia Frank.
